Fundamentally – the skills we need are
- Human
- Relational
- Meta-skills that can apply across topics and fields
The skills are NOT
- Technology-based. Yes, we might need to learn something about Blockchain, but we need to do so with an eye towards how this information can apply elsewhere. Technology moves way too fast for us to hitch our wagons on one particular technology or tool. Look for the “meta-skill.”
- One-and-done. Mastery is a process.
- The only thing you need to master. We will be asked to master a number of different things over the course of our lifetime. Further still, some areas of mastery may become obsolete and we will need to let that mastery go. For example, I got very good at replacing plugs on theatrical lighting fixtures back in the 80s and 90s. I don’t need that mastery anymore.
The uber-skill is the ability to develop and apply mental models.
Those mental models will help us understand our surroundings, determine what is important, and learn new things quickly, and find ways to apply that knowledge.
