A couple of weeks back, I asked: “What we are paying attention to?”
I wanted to take the opportunity to share 2 YouTube creators who are modeling what I would like to see more of in the world.
Interestingly, these models are coming from the gamer community.
Yes – the community known for hostility, GamerGate, and general anti-social behavior.
Model 1 – Shirley Curry – the 83-year-old grandmother who has cultivated a 700,000+ and growing following of gamers through her playthroughs of Skyrim.
She has become “Grandma” to a large population of people looking for an elder. Supportive when needed. No-nonsense when required. I love how she navigates her community.
The respect with which the community treats her is quite something. She’s tapped a need within the community for belonging, respect, grandmotherly storytelling, and guidance.
Pick any video and read the comments.
Her fans love her so much, they even made a 30-minute documentary.
The respect and love her community shows her gives me faith that humanity isn’t as bad as it sometimes appears.
Model 2 – Dan and Carrie Floyd + Dan Jones at PlayFrame. Game industry insiders playing games together and providing insightful design commentary.
It’s not just the commentary that keeps me watching this channel, or the game choice; it’s how much they respect each other and enjoy playing together.
I’ve learned a lot about how to model stick-to-it-ive-ness, particularly in all of the Dark Souls walkthroughs.
I never thought I would find myself enjoying watching video game playthroughs.
Who provides excellent models of community and community-building in your world?
